It’s a 2 hours and 20 minuets drive down to Mono Lake from South Lake Tahoe, California. While scenice drive with vistas of the snow-capped landscapes of the Sierras, we also seized the opportunity to top off the tank in the State of Nevada, where gas is much cheaper.
Before this trip, we learned online that Upper and Lower Antelope Canyons are similar in form. Upper Antelope Canyon is unique because light beams are visible but only during specific hours of the day. We are not big fans of light beam photos and the tour to Lower Antelope Canyon is cheaper and less busy, so we booked it with Ken’s Tour.

After leaving the Sonoran Desert, the exotic saguaros give way to short bushes. To our surprise, the region around Flagstaff is covered with forests of pine tree contrasting with the earlier landscapes of bleak deserts. After Flagstaff, the scenery switches back to arid, desert lands with less and less vegetation and more and more rocky mountains: sometimes white, sometimes pink.
